Freeze Frame: 5 Decades of Photographs
KIRKLAND'S FREEZE FRAME OPENS IN NEW YORK
Hollywood Photographer's Exhibit in the HP Gallery at Calumet Photo
NEW YORK - October 20, 2008 - Douglas Kirkland's lucky break came in 1961, shortly after
joining Look magazine as a fashion photographer at the age of 24. He got a call one day from his
boss asking him to go to Las Vegas to help the magazine's movie editor, who was interviewing
Elizabeth Taylor. She had specified that she would not be photographed, but after the interview
Kirkland convinced her to become his first celebrity subject. One of the images was featured on the
cover of Look, and the rest is history.
Freeze Frame: 5 Decades of Photographs by Douglas Kirkland is a blast from the Hollywood past
with more than 50 color and black-and-white photographs featuring stars of the silver screen. This
new exhibit, which opens Monday, October 20 and runs through Friday, November 7, showcases
images of screen stars like Audrey Hepburn, Robert Redford, Meryl Streep, John Wayne, Jack
Nicholson, Judy Garland and Leonardo DiCaprio. Through the years, Kirkland has worked on the
sets of more than 100 motion pictures, from period dramas to musicals that include Academy
Award winners for best picture, Out of Africa and Titanic.
By his own admission, Douglas Kirkland has been living a dream. "Just put it in your mind what it
would be like if you went to sleep and woke up in the most beautiful place in the world. That's
where I find myself today, and I haven't even been asleep. But I open my eyes and I can't believe
all these things are happening."
Other film personalities depicted in Freeze Frame include, from the 1960s: Charlie Chaplin, Peter
O'Toole, Sophia Loren, and Katherine Hepburn. From the 1970s: Robert DeNiro, Liza Minelli,
Diane Keaton and James Caan. From the 1980s: Dustin Hoffman, Susan Sarandon, Kim Basinger
and Geena Davis. From the 1990s: Kate Winslet, Drew Barrymore, Andie McDowell and Jessica
Tandy. Since 2000: Jessica Alba, Gene Hackman and Owen Wilson. Learn more about Kirkland's
fabulous career in a cover story article and audio interview from Calumet Focus magazine.
